Death of a Salesman

A Prerequisite of Modern Theatre

Death of a Salesman was performed using Ying Ruocheng’s acclaimed translation. The play was the Performance Workshop’s first attempt at producing a modern Western classic in its original environment, i.e., without adaptation or transplanting to a Taiwan background. Daniel S.P. Yang, Artistic Director of the Hong Kong Repertory Theatre, guest directed, with Lee Li-chun in the role of Willy Loman, Teng Cheng-hui as Linda, and television stars Ma Chin-tao and Niu Chen-tse in the roles of Biff and Happy. The play enjoyed a sold-out 12 performance run at the National Theatre but did not tour. The United Daily News noted the significance of the production in “opening a window of communication for the two sides of the Taiwan strait.”
